working on Mars. Spirit is in the high ground at the Columbia Hills.
It's examining a rock called "Pot Of Gold" before it begins its climb up
the martian mountains. "Pot Of Gold" shows signs of hematite, a mineral
that means water may have been in the area sometime in the distant past.
That's the same mineral that Opportunity studied in Gusev Crater, but
this is the first time Spirit has seen it. Dr.

KSC-04-S-00134 (04/27/2004) --- NASA's rovers
Spirit and Opportunity have flooded us with information about the red
planet. Scientists chose to explore Mars because it was closest in some
ways to Earth than any other planet in our Solar System. Both planets
have almost the same amount of land surface, even though Mars is about
half the size of Earth. Both planets have distinct seasonal weather
patterns and rotate in an elliptical orbit. But the differences between
the two planets are striking. 70 percent of the Earth is covered by
liquid water. There is strong evidence of vast regions of ice under Mars'
surface, but the rovers have only found evidence of liquid water in rock
patterns. Mars is cold and dry with an un-breathable atmosphere and has
no magnetic field.

KSC-04-S-00127 (04/22/2004) --- Blazing a trail of
discoveries at Meridiani Planum, NASA's Opportunity rover has come
across another. A volcanic rock, given the name Bounce, was found to
have similarities to meteorites that fell to Earth. Opportunity's Mini-tess
and Moessbauer spectrometers has found the element pyroxene, a volcanic
mineral, in the football-size rock. The rock's composition is unlike any
other rock or volcanic deposits already studied by Opportunity and
Spirit. NASA's Mars Odyssey may have given scientists a clue to its
origin with an image of a crater where Bounce could have been ejected
from upon impact. The rock was named Bounce after Opportunity, still in
its airbags, bounced on it while rolling to a stop.
